Midjourney AI Art Review

Welcome to my comprehensive Midjourney AI Art Review. When I wrote it, Midjourney was in beta release 2022. We are now at Midjourney 5 and its 2023. Midjourney AI Art is taking the artistic communities by storm. In this article we will look at what it can do? The price, the service and the potential use cases, including its potential use case for fantasy authors and fantasy artists.

First off, I was introduced to Midjourney by epic fantasy author Matthew Olney. I saw him posting up in his Epic fantasy Facebook group. The images were amazing, and I reached out to find out where I could try it. The rest is below. Read on for my Midjourney Review.

What Is Midjourney?

Midjourney AI is a new AI image generator that creates images based on text prompts. It uses a machine learning algorithm to interpret the text prompt and create new images. Basically, with this new bread of AI tools, AI software, you no longer need to spend countless hours honing your artistic skill. You simply need to be able to effectively describe your potential creation to generate images. Then the AI scours its resources to understand the concepts you have asked it to understand, then it creates according to that which you have asked, to created ai-generated art, ai images and in some cases art that is so indistinguishable from human art that your mind will be blown. This instantly, for me as a fantasy author and fantasy artist (bad fantasy artist) makes me ask the question. What is the future of AI and human art? And will this AI creativity spread to fantasy writing?

When someone can, at the click of a button, generate artworks of anything, emulating any style, creating pretty much anything you can think of, in minutes — what does it mean to be an artist?

Art has always been about expression and creativity, but with technology making it so easy to create art that looks realistic or even identical to works by famous artists, the definition of art and what it means to be an artist is changing. Some people might say that anyone can be an artist now, while others might argue that it takes more than just the ability to copy or recreate someone else’s work – it takes originality, vision and passion. What do you think?

Now, just for curiosity, I thought I would ask the AI to generate a question and then get it to answer that question about the future of AI art and above in italics is the result. As you can see and read, AI and creativity are progressing fast. Soon we may not need to write or draw, just give simple prompts. But if this is the case, then surely soon after humans would enter into a void. Is Ai art and human art the same? As humans, does our creativity simply come from the collective accumulation of all the art that we have processed? If so, then an Ai can do that better and faster. Or is creativity something more, is it more, is there more to it than our brain crunching data? What is human creativity and how does it differ from AI creativity? These are questions for brighter folks than I.

Anyway let’s crack on with the midjourney image generation review.

How Do you use Midjourney?

If you want to use Midjourney, you will need a Discord account and a basic plan, it is not free. To join the server, you need an invitation, which you can get by going to the official website and tapping the “Get Invite” button on the top right of the page. Once you’re on the server, read the #midjourney-beta channel for directions. You will now get 10 or so free credits to test the software before you are given the choice to subscribe for more access.

Then you go to one of the #Newbie servers and start typing your best ai prompts.

/imagine … Then we write what we want the AI artist to create.

Each image generated from a prompt will generate four versions. You can then upscale these or generate further variations of any of them. This is good because some creations are brilliant and some will be so very different from what you were looking for. Download the image you wish to save and open it in your art software of choice, such as Photoshop for further manipulation.

Fantasy Author Use case for Midjourney

I used midjourey to generate a number of images for my fantasy novel. Character ideas to landscapes and everything in between, see them over at The Silence In The Song book page. No midjourney ai review would be complete without some examples of midjourney art.

What kind of art can Midjourney AI generate?

There are potentially no limits to the kind of art and the style of art this bot can produce due to its reliance on human art as its research or base layer. You can have it replicate Davinci, Pop art, Graphic design styles, Neon, Pop art, high fantasy and any other style, categories, idea that you have a reference for.

Can artworks generated by MidJourney be used for commercial purposes?

I took the text below straight from their website.

Alternatives to Midjourney AI Art generator.

Stable Diffusion and Dall-e 2 by Open Ai are probably going to be the most comprehensive alternatives to midjourney. In fact, I moved over to a Stable Diffusion based system called ArtSmart.Ai in early 2023, due to one main factor 1: Price

IS MIDJOURNEY EXPENSIVE?

Midjourney AI Art is a subscription-based service that starts at $10 per month. It offers users access to the AI and the ability to generate up to 200 art prices per month. For $30 that turns into unlimited. a library of AI-generated artworks that they can use for personal or commercial purposes. An alternative is ArtSmart, it is private and only $18pm.

WHERE DOES MIDJOURNEY FIT IN THE AI ART GENERATION LANDSCAPE?

MIDJOURNEY is a new AI art app that offers users a unique way to create art using artificial intelligence. The app allows users to select from a variety of different art styles, which are then applied to their photos to create a one-of-a-kind work of art. MIDJOURNEY is the latest addition to the growing landscape of AI art apps, which also includes DALL·E 2 and others.

Midjourney AI Art Review Conclusion

I think for fantasy authors, this kind of AI art is a great place to generate ideas, artwork, character concept art, create worlds and gain inspiration. For fantasy artists, it could be of similar value in creating ideas and playing with different styles. At the moment (August 2022) AI art is fresh and exciting. However, I do not know what the future holds for this tech and how it will affect human creativity. For me at this moment, I recommend it.
